Louis-Sébastien Lenormand’s descent from the Montpellier Observatory (now the Tour de la Babotte) on December 26th, 1783.

Regarded as the first officially witnessed, successful parachute jump. Lenormand also coined the term parachute, but the concept was described several centuries earlier, and stories of attempts at breaking a person’s fall using air resistance date back as far as 90 BC. 

I imagine that “parachute” attempts began to be made around the world throughout human history - in conjunction with the invention and adoption of various types of parasol.
